R&S: Children's Choirs

Dianne Braymen received her BA degree from Northwest Missouri State University and has her Kodály Certification Level II and CMP track I. She is currently in her 18th year at Adel DeSoto Minburn Community School, where she instructs over 620students in a prekindergarten through fifth grade music curriculum and directs a Boys’ Singing Team and Fifth Grade Girls’ Choir.

Dianne is currently the Repertoire & Standards Chair of ICDA Children’s Choir and was the chair for the 2002 NCACDA children’s honor choir held in Des Moines. Besides teaching at the public school level she is a board member of the Heartland Children’s Choir, Leadership Team at ADM, Iowa Comprehensive Musicianship Project Team, and a private piano teacher.

Presenter: Michelle Swanson
Michelle Swanson is an instructor of Music Education at the University
of Northern Iowa. Mrs Swanson teaches Elementary General Music Methods and Music for Childhood Education, and also supervises student teachers in elementary general music. She also teaches elementary general music at Malcom Pr ice Laboratory School, on the UNI campus and conducts the UNI Children's Choir. Mrs. Swanson has taught elementary general music for 17 years. She enjoys the combination of both college students and young children - especially when the two groups work together! .

Swanson received her B.M.E. and M.M. degrees from U.N.I. She is currently working toward a doctorate in education. She was awarded a Gold Star Teaching Award in 1996. Mrs. Swanson has composed many songs relating to the Citizenship Education Program at Price Lab School. Her efforts were recently a
part of the Iowa Character Development Award received by the school in 2007 and 2008. Swanson enjoys working with music teachers throughout Iowa. She travels to school districts for in-services and consultations
regularly. Mrs. Swanson also hosts Orff workshops at UNI, three times during each school year. Her husband, Chad, is an attorney in Waterloo, and they have two children, Elizabeth (10), and Matthew (5).

Theme: Practical Tips for the Elementary Choirs - Making the Most of the Music

Description: This ICDA children's choir workshop will provide participants with practical tips on choosing music, leading relative warm ups, teaching part singing, conducting practical cues, and keeping children very interested in singing. This workshop will include insightful pointers to integrate into your own children's choirs immediately. An added plus will be the music reading of high quality 2-part music AND copies of the music for all participants to keep! Participants will greatly enjoy this worthwhile day of elementary choral music.
