Vocal Sessions Will Include:
9:30-10:00 Registration, Iowa State Music Building
Coffee, juice, rolls
10:00-10:50 “Teaching Middle School Students HOW To Sing”
Shelly Schaeufele, Vocal Instructor at Waukee MS, will provide strategies on working with adolescent voices in the choir rehearsal and voice lessons. A group of students will provide the live demonstration experience, with a question/answer session to follow.
11:00-11:50 “Tried And True Tricks For Working With High School Singers”
Mike Walag, ICDA R/S Chair for HS Choirs, will lead this discussion and reading session. Come and learn some fresh, new ideas for working with this age group. Successful warm-ups, rehearsal techniques, and great pieces for various abilities will be utilized.
12:00-1:00 A complimentary lunch will be served
1:15-2:00 CONCURRENT SESSIONS WILL BE OFFERED:
“The IHSMA Festival Series”
Alan Greiner, Executive Secretary of the IHSMA, will discuss rules and procedures for entering and preparing your students for the upcoming festival events;
OR
“Tried And True Tricks For Working With Elementary Students”
Diane Braymen, ICDA R/S Chair for Elementary Music, will lead this discussion and reading session. Add to your “bag of tricks” with creative rehearsal strategies for both general music and chorus classroom settings.
2:00-2:50 CONCURRENT SESSIONS WILL BE OFFERED:
“Building A Quality Program In The 1A/2A School”
Arla Clausen, Director of Choral Activities at IWCC, taught for over 20 years in a highly successful small school choral program in Southwest Iowa. Listen to ways to maintain a well balanced program, when you are your own feeder system. Great things can be done in small schools, without burning yourself out!

“Working With Parents/Boosters/Administration To Build Support For Your Program”
Brent Peterson, Vocal Music Director/Coach at Waukee Prairieview, will share strategies on working with other staff/organizations to create “win-win” opportunities for your students when it comes to scheduling multiple activities, fundraising, and getting parents to assist in projects so you can focus on the kids and making music.
3:00-3:50 Panel Discussion: “If I Knew Then What I Know Now”
Allen Chapman, ICDA McCowen Award Winner, will moderate this panel discussion for symposium participants, with a special focus on the young teacher. Three vocal directors who just finished their first/second years in the classroom will sit on the panel and discuss their initial fears, successes, and struggles in the classroom. Mr. Chapman will provide words of wisdom from the veteran teacher perspective. This ICDA tradition is a session you won’t want to miss!
3:50-4:00 Evaluation and Wrap-Up
So that we may prepare for the appropriate amount of food, PLEASE RSVP to Brent/Anne Peterson by OCTOBER 15th, at the contact info listed below. Registration and food is FREE to everyone in attendance, and mileage will be reimbursed for all current first year teachers. See you on October 27th!!
